DESCRIPTION:*Update (Sat 5:07pm):* The weather for Saturday is looking dubious\, based on \n predictions we think the chances of being able to see more than a few stars \n tonight is low. Hope to see you at the June star party.\n \n The nights are getting shorter\, but the sights are great. Saturn is now \n almost directly overhead\, and surrounded by Galaxies in Virgo and Leo. \n Globular Clusters are now in abundance as we begin our trek into summer. The \n Milkway will rise starting about 11pm\, bringing summer constellations with it \n into view.

DESCRIPTION:The Moon: we've sent men to it\; we've written poems about it\; we have a vast \n mythology around it. But have you ever looked at it close up? Mystic \n mountains\, craters\, and "seas" await you at the MHAA's second annual Observe \n the Moon Night at Vassar Farms.\n \n The Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association will be providing a guided tour of \n our nearest astronomical neighbor. This will include observing through club \n provided telescopes starting at 7pm.\n \n At 8pm we'll have an brief program where you can learn more about the moon\, \n where it came from\, how it effects us every day\, and some of the new exciting \n discoveries we are making every day about it.\n \n As an added bonus\, *Jupiter* will up by 9pm\, and will make for a great way to \n close out the night. You'll be able to see the red cloud belts on this far \n away world\, and all 4 moons will be visible in club provided scopes.\n \n The program is *free* and *open to the public*. It's great for all ages\, very \n family friendly\, and no advance reservation is required. As with all \n observing events\, we are subject to the whims of the weather\, and will be \n cancelled if conditions won't allow us to see anything. We'll update the \n website by noon the day of the event with status.\n \n This program is support by the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association [1] and \n the Vassar Farm Preserve [2] as part of their Exploring a Sense of Space 2011 \n event series.\n \n Note: early materials listed 7:30 as the start time\, we'll be starting at 7pm \n instead to get a longer observing session in for the night. Sorry for any \n confusion.\n \n Please help by downloading and printing the attached flier below (click on \n image for PDF version).\n \n \n \n [1] http://midhudsonastro.org\n [2] http://farm.vassar.edu/

The open clusters of \n Canis Major and Monoceres will also be great targets.\n \n This event is at Lake Taghkanic State Park and as such and RSVP is required \n [1] on our meetup site [2] so the State Police don't ticket you for being in \n the park when it's closed.\n \n Sunset                     5:30 p.m.\n End civil twilight         5:59 p.m.\n Moonrise                   4:28 a.m. on following day\n \n  \n \n [1] http://www.meetup.com/Mid-Hudson-Astronomical-Association/events/44825702/\n [2] http://www.meetup.com/Mid-Hudson-Astronomical-Association/events/44825702/

DESCRIPTION:THE CITY DARK [1] is a feature documentary about the loss of night. After \n moving to NYC from rural Maine\, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks a simple question - \n do we need the stars? - taking him from Brooklyn to Mauna Kea\, Paris\, and \n beyond. Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawaii\, tracking hatching \n turtles along the Florida coast\, and rescuing injured birds on Chicago \n streets\, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with \n lights - including increased breast cancer rates from exposure to light at \n night\, and a generation of kids without a glimpse of the universe above. \n Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists\, THE \n CITY DARK is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing \n stars.\n Written by Wicked Delicate Films [2]. DESCRIPTION:MHAA and SUNY New Paltz will be jointly putting on an event for the Transit \n of Venus [1].\n \n SUNY New Paltz and the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association have joined forces \n to provide the public with a unique opportunity to view an astronomical event \n that will not occur again in the lifetime of any person alive today.\n \n WHAT exactly is the Transit of Venus? At 6:03PM local time the planet Venus \n will\, from our perspective\, appear to touch the edge of the sun and begin its \n journey or transit across the face of our home star.\n \n WHY is this important? What prompted nations in the 18th century to launch \n expeditions to the far corners of the globe spending vast sums of money to \n view this event? Warring countries granted safe passage to expeditions from \n enemy nations all in an effort to determine ONE number! What could possibly \n justify such an undertaking?\n \n CURIOUS? Would you like to see what they saw using modern solar telescopes? \n And would you like to learn why they undertook such hazardous journeys \n frequently risking both their lives and their fortunes in the process?\n \n Dr. Amy Forestell will address these and many other aspects of this \n extraordinary event in her talk  at the SUNY New Paltz \, Lecture Center.\n \n The talk begins at 5:00PM followed by viewing of the transit through special \n solar telescopes in front of the Coykendall Science Building. \n http://www.newpaltz.edu/map/ [2]  Members of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical \n Association will  assist and provide additional solar scopes for public \n viewing.\n \n The event will also be streamed live onto giant screens in the Lecture Center \n from the Observatory atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The event will end at 9 PM.\n \n Before leaving\, the public will have a chance to view Saturn and it’s \n majestic rings – a thoroughly breathtaking experience - through telescopes \n set up on the quad. It’s the perfect end to a memorable night.\n \n Attached is a flyer providing information about this once in a lifetime \n event. I realize that many schools will not be able to distribute the flyers \n to every student but we would appreciate it if flyers could be posted on \n bulletin boards and if faculty could be informed so that students and their \n families could take advantage of this special opportunity.\n \n \n [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus\n [2] http://www.newpaltz.edu/map/

DESCRIPTION:The folks putting on the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival have asked if a \n presentation relating to Astronomy could be given in the Family tent. \n Something geared to a young audience. Would anyone who has engaged in this \n sort of thing before have any interest in helping out or have any materials \n that would be useful? Participants in any aspect of the outreach will receive \n a full day pass to the festival and be allowed to spend the night camping in \n the High Meadow or stay in the area designated for RVs if they wish to do so. \n They will also have plenty of time to enjoy themselves at a well run award \n winning gathering. The music at Grey Fox is not strictly bluegrass. It tends \n to be jam centric and has a very broad appeal. There are showers available as \n well as access to electricity and the site director has offered to assist \n members with transporting their gear. Thousands of people of all ages from \n all over the world attend the festival annually. We will be providing \n hundreds of people with the opportunity to take their first look through a \n telescope. The dates of the festival are July 19th through the 22nd although \n not much takes place on the 22nd. The number of day passes available are \n limited. Anyone able to take part in this event should contact Rick V at \n newsletter@midhudsonastro.org [1] or myself at secretary@midhudsonastro.org \n [2]  as soon as possible and let us know which days they will be there. This is explained in detail on the registration \n form. Your registration with AOS will entitle you to a pizza dinner on \n Saturday night during Starfest.\n \n  \n \n There is a last minute addition not on the registration form. In addition to \n the campsites and cabins\, there is also one trailer available at Shady Pines \n for people who don't want to camp. But this is first come first served and \n anybody thinking about this route should contact Shady Pines asap to reserve \n it. The trailer has 1 queen bed in a "bedroom" and 2 bunk beds in a common \n room\, plus bathroom and kitchen facilities. It costs $90 per night.
